Mr. Aylward, 42, remains the subsidiary's chief operating officer.

As its president he succeeds Daniel T. Geraci, who is leaving "to devote time to other interests," Phoenix said Thursday in a press release. Mr. Geraci, 49, will serve as an adviser to assist in the transition until Jan. 2.

Mr. Aylward joined Phoenix in 1996. He held several senior financial positions in its asset management business until 2002, when he became chief of staff for Dona D. Young, the chairman, president, and chief executive. He held that post until fall 2004, when he was named senior vice president and chief operating officer of asset management.

Phoenix ended 2005 with $27.7 billion of assets under management.
