In Brief: Request for Portfolio Rule Change Denied

WASHINGTON - The Securities and Exchange Commission said Thursday it has denied a petition filed by the Investment Company Institute requesting that personal portfolios be regulated as mutual funds instead of stocks.

Personal portfolios, an investment middle ground between stocks and mutual funds, allow investors to pick a collection of stocks, customize their allocation - like a self-designed mutual fund - and trade them actively for a monthly fee.
