The Houston private client services firm Stanford Group Co. plans to open an Austin office this fall and has hired a Merrill Lynch & Co. veteran to run it.

Carol McCann, who has worked for 21 years for Merrill in Austin, the last 10 as a senior resident director, will be a Stanford Group managing director. The firm plans to hire as many as 14 financial advisers to work with her. The plans were announced Tuesday.
Stanford, a unit of Stanford Financial Group of Houston, has been expanding fast. Last year it opened offices in Memphis and Longboat Key, Fla. Early this year it has opened them in Atlanta, Dallas, and Boca Raton, Fla.; this spring it announced plans to expand to a series of key markets over 12 to 24 months.
