Visa Profit Up 73% in Its Fiscal 3Q

Visa Inc. reported a 72.7% increase in fiscal third-quarter net income, to $729 million, from the year earlier, or 97 cents per class A share.

The dollar volume of U.S. transactions carried on the San Francisco payments company's network fell 4.1% from the year before, to $468 billion, during the fiscal second quarter, which ended in March, but the number of transactions grew 5.7%, to 8.2 billion.

The quarter included a $237 million gain on the sale of shares in a Brazilian payments company.

The average of analysts' estimates for earnings per share in the period was 64 cents.
