Contactless ATMs, which promise to provide faster access to cash and other transactions, are getting one of their first substantial rollouts in Spain.
Leveraging technology from Fujitsu, La Caixa’s new contactless ATMs allow users to tap contactless plastic against a reader and enter a PIN—rather than inserting their cards into a slot.
The machines have been rolled out in Barcelona, Sitges and Palma, with additional deployments scheduled for the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
The ATMs have two screens. One screen handles transactions, while the other offers operational and commercial support. The machines are also adapted to the Braille system and have voice software for the visually impaired, and have sign language videos for those with hearing difficulties. The machines will work with both cards and NFC-enabled smart phones, the bank said.
Wincor Nixdorf is also developing contactless ATM technology in conjunction with HID Global, though no bank deployments have been released.
