Westpac to Use Gemalto Tech for Contactless Payments

New Zealand-based financial services institution Westpac has contracted Gemalto, a Dutch digital security company, to provide its mobile payment technology to Westpac's customers.

Gemalto will make its Optelio contactless sticker available for use with mobile devices, which will allow Westpac customers to make contactless payments through embedded EMV chips. Such stickers are typically used with phones that do not have built-in Near Field Communication chips, which are used by mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet.

"Awareness of emerging payment methods is very high, and New Zealanders are willing to try new improved ways to pay, especially the younger generation," Michael Au, Gemalto's president of South Asia and Japan, said in a press release. "The contactless stickers are an interim step before the move to Near Field Communication on phones."
