Where payments meet politics

PayDirt: A PaymentsSource Podcast with Daniel Wolfe

Kate Fitzgerald, senior editor at PaymentsSource, talks to Eric Grover, principal at Intrepid Ventures, about the political activities that hinder the expansion of payment systems.

The big example is the disappearance and reappearance of Jack Ma, head of Ant Group, which operates Alipay in China. Even in other countries, regulators are wary of China's influence, as happened in the failed merger of Ant Group and MoneyGram -- or former President Trump's decision to ban Alipay in an order issued in his last days in office.

Other countries, such as India, have also exerted influence on foreign payment companies.
