WEST ALLIS, Wis. - The ongoing problems in the subprime mortgage market may be beginning to show up in credit unions, with one CU here reporting a $5.2-million first-quarter loss largely attributable to the loans.

LENOIR, N.C. - A positive DNA match off an old piece of gum led police to charge three men in the five-year-old robbery of Members' CU branch here. Five years ago, investigators found a discarded paper towel with dried blood on it and chewing gum, which was stuck on the door lock to hold it in place. The blood and gum yielded DNA that matched a sample taken from Jackie Scarberry, who was arrested for a recent robbery at High Country Bank near here.

MILWAUKEE - Metavante Corp., which is preparing to go public in a spin-off from Marshall & Ilsley, has hired Timothy Oliver, a 39-year-old treasurer at nearby Rockwell Automation, as its new chief financial officer. Oliver will report directly to Frank Martire, the former Fiserv executive who will be Metavante's CEO. Metavante is a conglomerate of financial service companies acquired over the last three years by M&I, including the NYCE electronic payments network, the Endpoint Exchange electronic check clearing network, and several others. It is one of several payments systems being brought to the market over the next few months, including last week's debut of Discover Financial Services, the parent of Pulse EFT, and Visa USA, which is going public in an IPO.

MIDDLETOWN, Penn. - Natural-person credit unions appear to agree with Wall Street that the Fed will not be making any changes to the Federal Funds rate this year and as a result have been not only pouring deposits into corporate CUs but moving out of overnights and into longer-term investments.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The $1-billion South Carolina FCU has made a $45,000 donation to a fund organized to help the families of the nine Charleston firefighters who died in a June Warehouse fund. The credit union issued a statement saying it was donating $5,000 for each of the fallen firefighters. The credit union's branches are also collecting funds.
