In his role as Chief Information Officer at ING DIRECT Canada, Charaka is responsible for leading and managing the Bank's information technology operations, strategy and infrastructure as well as the architecture, design and delivery of all systems. In addition, Charaka is responsible for the Project Management Office and Testing & Quality Assurance functions. Charaka has an extensive background in strategic technology planning, application development, infrastructure operations, and business process architecture.
Prior to his current position, he served in many Information Technology roles including Vice President of Software Development, responsible for eBusiness Development. He has participated in the setup of greenfield banking operations in France, USA and the UK for ING DIRECT. He has also participated in technology architecture strategy initiatives in Spain and Germany for ING DIRECT.
Before joining ING DIRECT in March 1999, Charaka held software development positions in the financial, healthcare, software development and public sectors in Canada, Australia and Sri Lanka. Charaka is a member of the British Computer Society and began his IT career immediately after graduating from a computer sciences program at the National Institute of Business Management in Sri Lanka. In 2011 Charaka was recognized as ComputerWorld Canada’s 2011 IT Leader of the Year in the large enterprise category. Outside the office, Charaka has volunteered his skills and passion for technology to help The Stop, a local community based organization to define and implement a sustainable IT strategy.
