OTS Boosts Supervision Fees by 5%
WASHINGTON - Saying it has tightened its belt as much as possible, the Office of Thrift Supervision announced on Friday a 5% increase in the fees charged thrifts to fund its regulatory operations.
The increase, the first since July 1990, takes effect next month. The agency also said it will collect the fees semiannually instead of quarterly.
Under the new formula, a strong, $1 billion-asset thrift would pay $98,525 in the first half of 1992, up from $93,900 in the last half of 1991. A troubled thrift that size would pay $147,890, up from $140,848.
The fees should cover most of the agency's $224 million budget for 1992. That's down from $263 million in 1991, but a shrinking industry must bear the costs.
