63% of credit unions rated very healthy.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Bauer Financial Reports Inc., which rates the health of financial institutions, said 63% of the nation's 13,297 credit unions are in "outstanding shape."

Bauer gave its five-star rating to 4,295 credit unions, and four stars to another 3,693. Those in these two categories are in "outstanding shape," Bauer said.

Another 1,503 credit unions received three stars, meaning they are adequately capitalized; 179 got zero to two stars; and 3,627 were not rated because they are not federally insured or have assets under $1 million.

Of 46 "critically undercapitalized" credit unions with no stars, 13 are insolvent and 33 were projected to become insolvent in the near term.
