In Brief: Community Development Chief Leaving NCUA

The federal regulator's point man on community-development credit unions is leaving Tuesday to take a lobbying job with the California Credit Union League.

Christopher Kerecman, director of the National Credit Union Administration's Office of Community Development Credit Unions since its creation last spring, said he had planned on returning to the industry ever since he joined the agency in 1990.

"I never considered myself a full-time federal employee," he said in an interview. "My goal all along has been to get back into the movement. It came a little sooner than I'd thought."

Mr. Kerecman will work as a federal lobbyist for the California league in Pomona. His job will bring him to Washington about 40 days out of the year.

Mr. Kerecman came to the agency as executive assistant to director Robert Swan. He championed community-development credit unions within the agency and pushed policies that led to the chartering of new institutions and a more supportive supervisory role.

No successor yet has been named, agency officials said.
