Tech Bytes: Wells Offering Cash Management Service

Wells Fargo & Co. has introduced ACH Express for Windows, a cash management service that automates many collection and disbursement processes.

The service electronically replaces the writing and distribution of payroll and vendor checks and automates businesses that have large volumes of cyclical billings. It also electronically pays state taxes and transfers funds between accounts.

"The key reason Wells is focusing on Windows-based software is that we have an extremely wide range of customers that require a wide range of applications and functionality," said Bryan Laws, bank vice president and automated clearing house manager.

With ACH Express for Windows, a company's funds can be collected and disbursed from Wells Fargo and non-Wells Fargo accounts.

Some banks are moving away from Windows-based treasury workstations, preferring more flexible browser-based systems. Windows and DOS systems require complicated upgrades if computer-format or regulatory changes occur. Browser technology can be updated at the bank's back end and uploaded to customers.

A significant number of Wells Fargo customers cannot use Web-based software, Mr. Laws said. The bank expects to have 1,500 clients using ACH Express as those using DOS-based software switch over the next two years.

Wells Fargo is evaluating a Web-based ACH product as well.
