Short Takes: Unionbancal Group Names Acting Chief

Unionbancal Corp. of San Francisco has named a new acting head for its trust and private financial services group.

Pieter Westerbeek 3d was previously a senior vice president of Union Bank of California, a $32.3 billion-asset institution.

Mr. Westerbeek, 47, is likely to be named the permanent head of the group - which includes private banking, investment management, business trust, and brokerage services-after the company concludes an evaluation of operations throughout its organization. Though the permanent appointment is not guaranteed, a spokeswoman said, Unionbancal does not intend to do additional recruiting.

Yoshihiko Someya, the bank's deputy chairman, had been acting head of the group since last fall, when Yoichi Kambara returned to Bank of Tokyo- Mitsubishi Ltd., which holds a majority stake in Unionbancal.
