Provident of New York Names Kopnisky New CEO

Provident Bank in Montebello, N.Y., announced Monday that longtime President and Chief Executive Officer George Strayton is retiring and that its board has hired former KeyCorp executive Jack Kopnisky to succeed him.

Strayton took the helm of Provident in 1986 and under his leadership the bank made several acquisitions in New York and New Jersey and, in 1999, became a publicly traded institution. The bank now has $2.9 billion of assets and 35 branches. Strayton will remain a member of the bank's board of directors.

In a news release, Provident said it selected Kopnisky to replace Strayton after a year-long search. Kopnisky, 55, held a number of leadership positions at KeyCorp and its predecessor banks from 1998 to 2005, including stints as president of retail and consumer banking. Since 2009, he has been chief executive officer of SJB Escrow Corp., a $1.1 billion investment pool, and from 2005 to 2008 he was the president and CEO of First Marblehead Corp.

Kopnisky will start his new position on July 6.
