GOP Wants More Details on Warren's Role in Foreclosure Settlement

WASHINGTON — House Republicans will press the Treasury Department for more information on Elizabeth Warren's role in the mortgage foreclosure settlement negotiations.

Lawmakers on the House Oversight and Financial Services committees have drafted a letter requesting documents and records related to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's involvement in the negotiations between the state attorneys general and the top five mortgage servicers.

In a draft letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, lawmakers ask for un-redacted copies of any and all communications between CFPB and the AGs, or any federal agency or servicer; and any communications between Warren herself, and the AGs, federal agencies, servicers or plaintiffs' attorneys in any class action lawsuit.

The letter follows the release last week of emails obtained by Judicial Watch — a conservative-leaning watchdog group — that detailed some of Warren's meetings with the state and federal agencies. The group obtained the documents through a public records request.

Lawmakers said their previous requests for these documents and records were rebuffed.

"It appears that the CFPB has been deeply involved in the mortgage servicing settlement negotiations and that its role goes far beyond the mere offering of 'advice,' under the Merriam-Webster's definition or any other reasonable interpretation of that term," the letter said.
