Banking SuperPAC Narrows Focus to Four Races

WASHINGTON — Friends of Traditional Banking, a banking SuperPAC, has narrowed its congressional elections "watch list" for the November midterm races to four tight Senate contests.

The group, which was formed ahead of the 2012 elections, had released a preliminary list of 20 congressional races to watch in June, and then narrowed that list to seven Senate races last month. The SuperPAC will soon cut the list to two candidates, and will encourage bankers to contribute to those campaigns directly.

"Our strategy is to encourage friends of traditional banking around the country to donate what they can to the two races most critical to our industry," Rick Sanborn, a Friends of Traditional Banking board member and chief executive of Seacoast Commerce Bank in San Diego, Calif., said in a press release.

The group is supporting four GOP candidates in their Senate races. They include Rep. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who is running against Arkansas incumbent Sen. Mark Pryor; state senator Joni Ernst, who is running for an Iowa U.S. Senate seat against Rep. Bruce Braley; Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who is running against Colorado incumbent Sen. Mark Udall; and Terri Lyn Land, who is running in Michigan against Rep. Gary Peters.
