SunTrust recruits JPMorgan exec to lead business lending in Houston

SunTrust Banks has hired a former JPMorgan Chase banker to open its first commercial loan office in Houston.

The $206 billion-asset Atlanta company has named Brett Fenn market president for Houston, it said in a news release Tuesday. Fenn will oversee investments in commercial banking operations in the market and seek to broaden the products and services offered to business clients.

Fenn will also coordinate with SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, the company's investment bank division, on cross-selling investment banking and capital markets services.

“We see a gap in the commercial banking space, where many businesses have been underserved and need access to capabilities beyond a loan — like M&A advisory, capital markets and treasury management,” Jason Cagle, commercial banking executive, said in the release.

SunTrust has been expanding in Texas recently. The bank opened a private wealth management office in Houston in April 2017. It added commercial banking capabilities in Dallas-Fort Worth within the past 18 months. And SunTrust Robinson Humphrey and its Lantana Energy Advisors division have been in Houston since 2014. SunTrust does not operate retail branches in Texas.

Fenn was previously an executive director in corporate client banking energy finance for JPMorgan in Houston, where he had worked since 2001.
