It's been a busy month. Bank One Corp. pulled a mega-switcheroo by contracting to shift the processing of its 50 million credit card accounts next year to Total System Services Inc. (TSYS) from First Data Corp. Bank One, which plans to license TSYS' software to eventually process in-house, also landed Disney's new cobranded card.

The payments pendulum has been swinging debit's way for quite some time now, but recent numbers show just how much debit is a growth industry and credit is, to be kind, "mature."

If present trends keep up, the card industry is going to be about as bland as canned chili. I'm referring to the stepped-up regulation of the subprime sector and moves by Visa and MasterCard to rein in X-rated Web sites.
