A Rare Meeting of NCUA Chairmen

WASHINGTON — It could only happen at GAC: four of the six still-living past or current NCUA chairmen met up in the exhibit hall to chat at CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference.

Dennis Dollar (far left) was appointed to the NCUA Board by President Bill Clinton in 1997 and was later named chairman in 2001 by President George Bush. He served on the board until 2004. Prior to his tenure on the NCUA Board, Dollar was the CEO of Gulfport VA FCU (now Gulf Coast Community FCU), Gulfport, Miss. He currently heads up credit union consulting firm Dollar Associates.

JoAnn Johnson was appointed to the board by President George W. Bush in 2002 and served as chairman from 2004 to 2008. Prior to serving on the NCUA Board, Johnson was an elected representative in the Iowa state legislature. She is currently the head of Iowa's Division of Credit Unions.

Michael Fryzel was appointed to the board by President George W. Bush in 2007, serving as chairman from July 29, 2008 through Aug. 24, 2009, after President Barack Obama was elected. His term on the board expires later this year in August. Prior to being appointed to the board, Fryzel oversaw Illinois credit unions during his tenure with the Illinois Division of Financial Institutions.

Debbie Matz was initially appointed to the NCUA board in 2002 and served until 2005. She then worked as EVP at Andrews FCU, Suitland, Md., after which she was tapped for the NCUA Board once again, this time as chairman, by President Obama in 2009 and is the current chairman.
