Alabama CU Takes Top Honors at HR/TD Council Conference

MADISON, Wis. — Ten credit unions  were honored for excellence in human resources and training by the CUNA HR/TD Council.

The council said the awards recognize credit unions that "exemplify excellence in human resources and training and promote credit union philosophies through people leadership."

"Best of Show" was given to Alabama Credit Union, a $670-million institution based in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a program called "Letting Go, Holding On: Empowering Employees through High Performance Teams." Alabama CU used "High Performance Teams" to push "important initiatives to employees who represent a cross-section of the organization. Teams are responsible for researching and making recommendations to the senior management."

Other winning entries included Pioneer West Virginia FCU, a $196-million institution based in Charleston, W.Va., for its "Ask Employees and You Shall Learn a Lot"  program under which management was able to respond to employee concerns with decisive action, and getting employees to "feel more comfortable" and routinely involved in providing their thoughts and incorporating those thoughts into decision making

Purdue FCU, an $848-million institution based in West Lafayette, Ind., was also honored for "Employee Engagement." The credit union developed a program called "Growth, Opportunity, Development and Leadership Program," or GOLD, that provided training and opportunity for tellers and Member Service Specialists.

Also, Pen Air FCU, a $1.29-billion institution based in Pensacola, Fla., was lauded for its "Embracing Culture Program" which helped its employees to understand the company's new culture and be prepared to make a commitment to it by the year's end.

Other honorees comprised Heritage Trust FCU ($496-million in assets; Summerville, S.C.); Rivermark Community CU ($642-million; Beaverton, Ore.); Mountain America CU ($4.48-billion; West Jordan, Utah);  Town & Country FCU ($285-million; South Portland, Me.); and University of Michigan CU ($636-million; Ann Arbor, Mich.).
