BOULDER, Colo. – Elevations CUs yesterday announced the hiring of Gerry Agnes, most recently president of Riverside, Calif.-based Altura CU, as its new president and CEO.
Agnes will succeed Bill Sterner, the well-known president of Elevations who died of a heart attack March 31.
Elevations, known until 2007 as University of Colorado FCU, is the state’s fourth-largest credit union with $835 million in assets and 75,000 members.
Agnes, who had served as Altura’s chief operating officer, was named president of the $925 million credit union last year in a reorganization, with Mark Hawkins retaining the title of CEO. Altura has more than 110,000 members.
Altura has been one of the few Southern California credit unions to avoid the region’s difficult economy. The credit union was profitable for 2007 and for the first six months of 2008.
Sterner was a long-time credit union activist who broke in with the World Council of CUs. He helped organize credit unions on Indian reservations before heading Elevations. He was married to Pat Brownell, former director of the National CU Foundation.
