SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Police are searching for thieves believed to have skimmed ATM information from as many as 90 area customers, including members of Alaska USA FCU and Arrowhead CU, as well as Desert Community Bank.

Authorities noticed a spike in thefts involving the fraudulent use of ATM cards in Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville and other areas of the High Desert during the past few weeks. Investigators discovered the thieves used a card-skimming device placed on the outside of an ATM to capture information from the card's magnetic strip. They also used binoculars or video cameras to watch people enter their PIN numbers.
The thieves then created clone cards to withdraw money from the various institutions.
