CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An armored guard fired several shots at a bike-riding bandit who tried to rob him while he was replenishing the ATMs outside of Charlotte CU yesterday, but the bandit escaped on his bike.
The robber was not hit as he peddled away empty-handed, according to Officer Robert Frey, spokesman for the Charlotte Police.
“Nothing was taken,” Frey told The Credit Union Journal yesterday, after the failed robbery.
The gun-wielding suspect approached the Loomis Fargo truck on his bike around 7 a.m. yesterday as guards were loading the ATMs with cash, and he demanded money. But one of the guards pulled his own gun and the assailant mounted his bike and rode off as the guard fired shots at him, said Frey.
The would-be robber was at large yesterday afternoon.
This was the second failed robbery attempt on a cash delivery at Metro Charlotte CU in recent months, according to Nathan Tothrow, spokesman for the credit union. “We had an incident a couple of months ago with the same carrier around the same time in the morning when someone attempted to rob them as well,” he said.
