BOSTON – Charley on the MTA won’t recognize the credit union anymore, MBTA Employees CU.
That’s because the credit union named for the employees of the famous ‘T’ immortalized in the song is changing its name to Mass Bay CU, in order to reflect a broader field of membership. Chartered in 1936 to serve employees of the Boston Elevated Co., later the Mass Bay Transit Authority, the $175 million credit union has expended to also serve the community of South Boston, known as "Southie."
"This is not a merger or change in management or ownership of any kind," said John Thomas, president of Mass Bay CU. "We are simply changing our name to reflect the changing times and to be more easily identifiable to people who live in South Boston as a place they can come for all of their banking and financial services needs.
A new logo also accompanies the name change. More than just an arbitrary image, the new design references specific aspects of the Credit Union. The 4 Stars depict its membership fields: The MBTA, Family Members, The Community, and T-Affiliated Unions. The 3 Sails represent its core values of Personal Service, Value, and Integrity.
