Central Macomb Community Now Freestar Financial, Expands FOM

Clinton Township, Mich. -- Central Macomb Community Credit Union, Clinton Township, Mich., will change its name to FreeStar Financial Credit Union, effective April 4, in order to "better align" with its new field of membership (FOM), which now encompasses ten counties in Southeast Michigan and all military members throughout the state of Michigan.

Chartered in 1957, the $181-million institution last changed its name in 1999 when it expanded its membership across Macomb County. Now, the credit union's updated FOM includes anyone who lives, works, worships or is educated in Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties, as well as military personnel throughout Michigan.

"Over the past year we have interviewed our membership and the community, and researched the markets we serve to ensure the chosen name was a good fit for all," said Drema Isaac, the credit union's president and CEO since 2002, in a statement.

Explaining the choice of the name "FreeStar Financial," Issac said the credit union sought to find a "strong name" that was "non-geographically based," as well as one that "would carry us through many years to come."

"Our symbol [is] an iconic and meaningful star," Isaac noted. "The star is a symbol of navigation and speaks to the financial guidance we provide. The star is also a salute to our military roots and for the freedom and bravery of our military members."

FreeStar Financial CU presently has four branches in Macomb County and will seek other expansion opportunities over the next few years, the CU said.
