Cherry Blossom, SacTown Runs Yield $487K For Children's Miracle Network

WASHINGTON — The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten-Mile Run here and the SacTown Ten-Mile Run in Sacramento, Calif., brought in a total of $487,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The two races are part of Credit Union Miracle Day.

"We are extremely grateful for everyone's commitment to making this amazing donation to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals nationwide a reality," said Theresa Mann, Chairman of Credit Union Miracle Day and President/CEO of The Partnership FCU, Washington. "Hundreds of volunteers from our credit unions and business partners have given their time and talent to this vital cause that helps kids receive quality medical treatment."

In another photo finish this year for the Cherry Blossom race, Stephen Sambu sprinted to the end to narrowly beat out last year's victor Daniel Salel. Both recorded a finishing time of 45:29. In the women's race, Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia handily won with a time of 52:05.

The Cherry Blossom race also played host to the USA 10-Mile Championship. Olympian Janet Bawcom of Flagstaff, Ariz., defended her title and broke her own record with a finish of 52:12. Christo Landry of Ann Arbor, Mich., won the men's USA 10-Mile Championship with a time of 46:41.

At the Credit Union SacTown race, the top male and female runners were Shadrack Biwatt of Folsom, Calif., at 47:58:42; and Kim Conley of West Sacramento at 54:43:58.

A record number of Members of Congress signed on to be honorary race chairs for the Cherry Blossom Ten-Mile Run — 231 — representing all 50 states, and more than 900 congressional staffers participated, as well.

Although this was the 42nd running of the Cherry Blossom Ten-Mile Run, Credit Union Miracle Day took over as the sponsor of the Cherry Blossom Run in 2002. CU Miracle Day is the collaboration of more than 100 CUs, 48 business partners and CUSOs. The SacTown race became part of the CU Miracle Day family three years ago. A third race, the Freedom Run, will be held at Wiesbaden Army Garrison in Germany on April 12.
