NEW YORK – Cliff Rosenthal, CEO of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, is headed to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as assistant director, leading the Office of Financial Empowerment.
Rosenthal informed Credit Union Journal of his new role after announcing last week he was leaving the Federation after leading the organization for nearly 30 years. Initially, Rosenthal did not disclose where he was heading. Rosenthal will begin his new position in Washington May 7.
Rosenthal said the Federation has “traveled a long way” since the 1980s to become a nationally recognized and respected voice for low-income communities. “The Federation is proud to count more than 200 credit unions in our membership, with total assets of some $13 billion and membership of 1.7 million. I can tell you that reaching these heights was beyond our wildest dreams back in the 1980s. This is the toughest job I've ever loved. Leaving is not easy.”
