FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Three Rivers FCU here is fighting back against fraudsters that have used the credit union's name to bilk them out of money.
The CU produced a 30-second public service announcement to be released on its website and broadcasted on local television with tips on how to avoid becoming a fraud victim.
"We have had a lot of fraud attempts in our community involving automated phone calls going out stating that "3 Rivers" was calling to inform the potential victim that their card was deactivated. The call then tried to direct the person to press 1 to then provide their card number and PIN," Jim Johnson, VP of member services told Credit Union Journal. "We all know that fraud is increasing and we need to be more diligent in educating and making aware our communities."
The PSA implores viewers to never give out their personal information to unprompted calls or text messages asking for account information, telling them to "not be a victim" and to report any such fraud attempts to their financial institutions. It is also very customizable; the message does not mention any specific financial institution or community and the background and music are changeable. 3 Rivers has offered the PSA for use by other CUs.
