CUNA Builds Campaign War Chest To $582,000

CUNA reported last week its political action committee raised $182,000 last month and distributed $115,000, leaving it with $582,000 as the two-year congressional election cycle enters its fourth quarter.

Among the contributions last month was $5,000 going to Independent Vermont Rep. Bernard Sanders, making the maximum $10,000 contributed to the Senate campaign of the only avowed Socialist in Congress. CUNA also contributed $5,000 to the campaign of Democratic State Sen. Peter Welch to fill Sanders' place in Vermont's only House seat.

CUNA also contributed $5,000 to another potential congressional newcomer, Republican State Sen. Jim Jordan, who is running for the state's fourth district House seat. Other large contributions last month went to: Reps. John Dingell (D-MI), $5,000; Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI), $5,000; Vern Ehlers (R-MI), $5,000; Vic Snyder (D-AR), $5,000; Jerry Weller (R-IL), $5,000, and Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI), $4,500.

CUNA also made contributions last month to: Reps. Allyson Schwartz (D-PA), $4,000; Michael Michaud (D-ME), $4,000; Joe Schwarz (R-MI), $3,700; Jim Matheson (D-UT), $3,000; Sens. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), $3,000; and Democrat John Salazar, brother of freshman Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar, who is running again for Congress, $4,000.
