WASHINGTON – CUNA is expected as soon as today to name a successor to President Dan Mica, who is retiring after 13 years heading the national trade group.
The list of finalists has been trimmed in the past two weeks as Massachusetts CU League President Dan Egan and Republican Congresswoman JoAnn Emerson have taken themselves out of the running. Emerson told supporters in recent days she is running for election to a 10th term in the House.
The final list is believed to include former Republican Congressman Jim Nussle of Iowa, who served in the Bush cabinet, Democratic Congressman Bart Gordon of Tennessee and California CU League President Bill Cheney.
The CUNA job has become one of the highest-paid lobbying jobs in the Capital, with Mica earning almost $2 million in 2008, the latest year for which records are available.
