WASHINGTON – CUNA reportedly has narrowed its CEO search to a handful of candidates and is expected to name a successor to Dan Mica as early as the first week of May.
Sources told Credit Union Journal the finalists in the CEO search are: Democratic Rep. Bart Gordon of Tennessee, a six-term congressman and member of the Energy and Commerce Committee; Republican Rep. Jo Ann Emerson of Missouri, an eight-term member of the House who is on the Appropriations Committee; former Republican Rep. Jim Nussle of Iowa, who also served as head of the Office of Budget and Management for the Bush administration; Massachusetts CU League President Dan Egan; and, California CU League President Bill Cheney.
The sources said Gordon, Nussle and Egan are the preferred candidates at this point.
The executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates has been interviewing the finalists for the job.
Mica, who took the helm at CUNA in 1996, has announced his retirement next January, but said he would be willing to leave earlier at the will of the CUNA Board.
CUNA representatives declined to comment. Harriet May, president of GECU and chairman of the CUNA Board's CEO Search Committee said, “It would be inappropriate to make any comment at this time; the CUNA CEO search committee is going about its work diligently and will not confirm or deny any candidates or announcement dates.”
