BEAVERTON, Ore. - Pamela Leavitt, SVP-governmental affairs and public relations for the CU Association of Oregon, noted the state passed comprehensive identity theft legislation in 2007.
The bill, known as the Oregon Consumer Identity Theft Protection Act, required notification of consumers for security breaches and allows consumers to freeze their credit. It also places other requirements- including not displaying Social Security Numbers-on any organization that holds consumers' identity information. The bill was successful, Leavitt said, because merchants were "at the table" during negotiations over the bill, as were consumer groups and others.
