Debt Collector Charged With Stealing CU Members’ IDs

LOCKPORT , N.Y. – A woman who worked a debt collector was charged in state court with stealing the account information of three clients she used to tap into their accounts at Cornerstone Community FCU.

Hope Dunlap, 38, allegedly used the information she obtained while working with the clients on behalf of a local debt collection agency to write checks on the credit union members’ accounts and used the money to pay hers and her boyfriend’s bills, according to John Dipasquale, of the New York State Police. “All the victims were contacted by her company to collect debts. She takes the numbers of their accounts, then uses them,” he told The Credit Union Journal yesterday.

The suspect is accused of using the information to buy items online, pay utility bills and pay for camping trips, he said.
