WORKINGTON, U.K. — Unlike in many states where a home remains a protected asset, a co-founder of a local church credit union here, who has been convicted of embezzling funds, has been told by a court to sell his home if he has to in order to repay the missing funds.
Thomas Grierson, 56, was found guilty of stealing £71,303.81 from Workington and District Credit Union, but he has assets of just £18,256, including the proceeds of his home should he be able to sell it.
Grierson, who has already served two years in prison, was told to repay the money within six months or have nine additional months added to his sentence.
Grierson was found to have taken money from both petty cash and to have forged documents in the names of members to obtain larger amounts. At the time of his arrest police found £3,000 in his car's glove compartment.
