SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ray Curtin, the long-time president of Empower FCU and a life-long resident of Syracuse, died unexpectedly Monday at 60.
The cause of death was not determined yesterday, but Curtin had participated in a bike race Sunday, then had dinner with his family, and passed away in the night.
Curtin spent more than 30 years in financial services, holding positions at OnBank, Merchants Bank, Agway and Price Waterhouse before joining the credit union industry as president/CEO of Empire FCU, which now is part of Empower FCU, He also taught at SUNY Oswego where he was Professor of Finance.
He helped engineer the 2007 merger between his credit union, Empire FCU, and Power FCU, creating a $680 million credit union, the largest in the region. After the merger, he served as the new credit union’s president and co-CEO until his retirement last December.
