EL PASO, Texas – A woman who robbed two city credit unions earlier this year and was arrested as she prepared to hit a third, was sentenced Monday to 50 months in federal prison.

Romelia Vargas-Garcia, 35, who robbed branches of El Paso Area Teachers FCU and GECU, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery in a plea bargain with prosecutors.

She made off with more than $6,000 from the two heists, police said.

El Paso police arrested Vargas-Garcia on Feb. 12 after she attempted to rob another GECU branch.
