Freddie Mac Reports Huge $8 Billion Loss

McLEAN, Va. – Freddie Mac is asking for another $10.6 billion in federal aid after posting a big loss in the first three months of the year, $8 billion.

The additional aid would bring the total of federal assistance provided to the bankrupt secondary mortgage market-maker to $61.3 billion.

First quarter results compared with a loss of $10.4 billion a year earlier. The most recent quarter includes $1.3 billion in dividends paid to the Treasury Department.

Fannie Mae also is expected to report another big loss later this week.

The federal government has infused $136 billion into the two companies since taking them under conservatorship in September 2008.
