SAN ANTONIO A man in his 60’s was arrested yesterday and charged with draining more than $200,000 from the Air Force FCU account of an 88-year-old longtime friend.
The victim told police she has known Stephen Lawson for about 20 years and before her husband died last year he asked his wife to give Lawson, 67, access to their credit union account so he could help her handle her finances.
Police said Lawson withdrew $175,000 from the account on July 21 without the member’s permission, then took out more than $29,000 two days later, but used none of the cash to pay the elderly member’s bills.
The two large withdrawals tipped off an alert credit union employee who notified the victim and opened an investigation.
Lawson was charged Thursday with theft, misappropriation of fiduciary property or property of a financial institution and exploitation of an elderly individual.
