The CUNA Board, which has shifted control of the board between the leagues and individual credit unions, was chaired the past two years by Harriet May, president of El Paso’s GECU, and by Texas CU League President Dick Ensweiler the two years prior to that.

Mercer played a key role all the way back to HR 1151, the 1998 legislative battle over field of membership when Georgia Rep. Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House, and every major national credit union bill since then. He joined the CUNA Board in 2005, was treasurer in 2010 and became vice chairman in 2011.

He also served on the board of the National Cooperative Bank and as a director of U.S. Central FCU.

In the early 1990s, Mercer was instrumental in forging a partnership between the Georgia credit union system and the emerging credit union system in Poland. He was recognized for his work in March 2004 by the National Association of Polish CUs.

The Georgia league represents 148 credit unions.
