Global Women Scholarship to Address Industry Leadership Gap

The Global Women's Leadership Network will award scholarships to four women employed at credit unions around the world during the World Credit Union Conference and Global Women Forum in Belfast, Northern Ireland from July 17 to 20.

This year's scholarship recipients are: Gertrude Chiomba, finance officer at Sunbird SACCO in Malawi; Jane Wangari Ombongi, chief executive at Mageresa SACCO Society in Kenya; Almira Sagatovas, chairperson at Association of Credit Unions of Agro-Industrial Complex in Kazakhstan; and Laura Zavala, business development officer at Elevations Credit Union in Boulder, Colo.

The World Council of Credit Unions is a global trade association and development agency for credit unions. The organization's technical assistance programs introduce new tools and technologies to strengthen credit unions' financial performance and increase their outreach, and has implemented more than 290 programs across 71 nations.

The scholarship program is part of the World Council of Credit Unions' efforts to close the industry leadership gap between genders, the organization said in a news release.

"The network is committed to advocating, accelerating and advancing women in the credit union industry," Calyn Ostrowksi, executive director of World Council's Foundation and Global Women's Leadership Network, said in the release. "Our scholarship program nurtures the development of high-performing female leaders and allows participants to share experiences from other cultures."

The forum in July will feature keynote speaker Betsy Myers, President Clinton's White House senior adviser for women's issues and author of Take the Lead: Motivate, Inspire, and Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Everyone Around You.
