The $8.2 billion institution announced the move to ensure the overall safety of its members' accounts.

Members calling Golden 1's main telephone number Thursday morning were greeted with a recorded statement noting that if they were calling about the "payment card compromise at Target," the credit union has identified affected cards and is "in the process of contacting impacted members and replacing their cards."

These members will not be liable for fraudulent transactions on their accounts, according to Golden 1.

Target said Dec. 19 that security for the cards may have been breached between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 during purchases in stores. Though the retail giant said it had identified and resolved the issue, the compromise occurred during the most important period of the year for retailers, with shoppers already showing reluctance to spend.
