Now in its second year, Granite Credit Union's C.O.R.E. (Coaching for Outstanding Results and Engagement) Leadership program was designed for 20-plus members of its management team and provides tools to be successful leaders and coaches.

The program consists of four all-day sessions taught by outside experts, six half-day sessions led by internal experts and one in-house project that applies lessons learned.

"The goal is to develop our leaders to be overall better communicators and mentors. We have seen a significant increase in one-on-one coaching sessions with managers and employees this year," said Granite CU's CEO Lynn Kuehne. "Monthly coaching sessions is a factor on a manager's evaluation which helps."

Granite CU's approach to education is also realized in its "IRA Specialists" program, wherein employees earn accreditation as IRA experts for the credit union. To date, there are 12 employees in various stages of the program.

"It requires an application process, internal training-course participation and external training courses," said Kuehne. "This year as we went through the heavy IRA season of February through April, we saw amazing results from IRA Specialists who stepped in to assist other employees and members with IRA questions."

IRA Specialists meet every other month to discuss what they can do to help all employees better understand IRA products so they can deliver outstanding service to members. Kuehne said this program is "education in action" and that employees have given many rounds of positive feedback.

"The IRA Specialists must continue their education with annual re-certification to keep their accreditation," says Kuehne. "We provide a bonus payment of $500 each year in October if the accreditation is maintained."

Founded in 1935, the CU currently operates eight branches serving more than 31,000 members.
