TAMPA, Fla.—Motorists lined up their cars early Thursday morning to fill up on free gas courtesy of GTE Financial FCU, which held the giveaway in recognition of International Credit Union Day.
People waited for hours, getting up at the crack of dawn for the early morning promotion that lasted once 600 tanks were topped off. The giveaway was held at two Florida gas stations, one in Pinellas Park and another in Citrus Park.
The $1.6 billion CU gave away $30 in gas to GTE members and $15 to non-members. The CU said that on International Credit Union Day it wanted to do something special for the community and give back. GTE said it plans to run the promo again.
