ST. PAUL, Minn. – A man who put a gun to the head of an employee at Heartland CU and robbed the credit union of $18,000 earlier this year was convicted last week of armed robbery charges and is headed to prison.
A federal jury needed one hour last Tuesday to find Samuel Ewing, 29, guilty of armed robbery of a financial institution and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
Ewing walked into the Inver Heights branch around 10:20 am on March 26 and approached an employee and put a gun to her head and said Get up and walk that way,” according to authorities. Ewing kept the gun at the back of her head as he walked with her to the counter and had her put money into a bag. He walked out of the credit union to a pickup truck with $18,605 and drove away in a pick-up truck.
He was caught a short while later after his truck crashed and he was pursued by foot by police. The stolen credit union cash and a loaded gun were recovered at the scene.
