Gunman Collared In Last Week’s $267,000 CU Heist

CHICAGO – A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged shortly after last Wednesday’s armed robbery at Consumer’s Cooperative CU, in the northwest Chicago community of Mundelein when $266,786 was stolen.

Jaime Aguirre was captured by local police shortly after fleeing the credit union with a black plastic garbage bag containing the cash. Aguirre was captured in the backyard of a home near the credit union shortly after the robbery, the FBI said.

The suspect entered the credit union just after 9:00 a.m., brandishing a handgun and announcing a robbery, according to the FBI. He then ordered two credit union employees to fill with cash a black garbage plastic garbage bag that he brought with him. The two employees placed $266,786.30, which they obtained from numerous teller drawers and the credit union’s vault area, into the bag. The suspect then fled on foot, carrying the plastic bag filled with cash.

While the robbery was taking place, a passerby noticed the suspicious activity inside the credit union and called police. Police responding saw Aquirre attempting to flee through the parking lot, carrying the garbage bag that was stuffed with cash. When approached by an officer, Aguirre allegedly pointed his weapon at the officer, who took cover and called for back-up. The suspect was located a short distance away, hiding in the backyard of a nearby residence.
