HOUSTON – One of two young men who made off with $202,000 from the 2008 armed robbery of Investex CU with the help of a credit union employee was sentenced this week to 16-and-a-half years in prison.
As part of the sentence, Dominque Ervin, 20, must also pay restitution and forfeit a shotgun, a 1989 Cadillac and a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, which were all purchased with proceeds from the robbery.
Ervin and his accomplice, Carl Preston, also 20, entered the credit union right after opening on Nov. 5, 2008 wearing masks and armed with shotguns, according to police. They were given the go-ahead by cellphone from Dorcell Johnson, 19, who worked as a part-time employee at the credit union for two years.
Preston pointed his shotgun at an armed security guard and took his revolver and cell phone, while Ervin pointed his shotgun at Johnson and pretended to take him hostage. Ervin and Preston forced the guard and Johnson to the bank's vault in a back room, where they stuffed $202,250, which they split with Johnson.
On their way out, Ervin fired a single shotgun blast above the victims' heads, shattering the vault's security cameras, police said.
Preston was sentenced earlier to 13 years in prison for his role.
Johnson, the part-time employee, has also been charged with an earlier robbery at the credit union of almost $160,000. He is scheduled to be sentenced next week.
