Hampel, who has served as the trade association's chief economist since 1985, most recently stepped up to the plate to serve as CUNA's acting CEO during the search for a permanent CEO following the departure of former CEO Bill Cheney.

With Jim Nussle now in place as CUNA's permanent CEO, Hampel will become the first to hold the position of chief policy offier, advising both Nussle and Chief of Staff Rich Meade on key strategic initiatives for the trade association.

He takes on the newly created position in addition to his duties as chief economist.
