KENNEWICK, Wash. – HAPO Community CU agreed last week to acquire the city’s landmark building popularly nicknamed "the flashcube" and renovate it to accommodate a branch and administrative offices.
The 52,500-square-foot, four-story building was built in 1980 and got its nickname because it resembles the flashcube that attaches to traditional cameras.
HAPO's goal is to link the $1 billion credit union’s name with the building so firmly that "HAPO is the first word they say before flashcube," a credit union official said.
Remodeling of the interior will begin immediately with the exterior work to come sometime in the spring. In June, the credit union will open a new branch on the ground floor and move much of its home mortgage operations there as well.
