COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – A hatchet-wielding robber was arrested Tuesday after he made a second visit to the same credit union he tried and failed to rob earlier in the day.
Larry Burns, a 21-year-old transient from Denver, tried to walk into the Telco Triad Community CU branch wearing a black ski mask over his face and fiddling with something up his sleeve, according to police, who recovered a hatchet and mask after they arrested Burns.
Credit union employees kept the masked-man locked out of the branch early Tuesday and again on his second appearance in the afternoon. The second time, a police officer in an unmarked car was near the credit union and followed Burns, then arrested him.
Burns and an alleged accomplice, 52-year-old James Lunsford, attempted to rob three more banks Tuesday, but they never got away with any money, according to police.
